Unearthing the Sabbath Truth

An otherwise typical youth soccer team, The Wild Boars, in Thailand inadvertently became international frontpage news as the saga of their disappearance, subsequent discovery, and ongoing rescue efforts have resonated with millions of people around the world.

A simple afternoon caving trip after practice turned into an ordeal that stretched into weeks and will probably impact their lives for years to come.

Hundreds have since volunteered their time to provide support for the team of divers working to save the boys trapped within the extensive underground labyrinth. The job wouldn’t have been so difficult or even necessary, except that early monsoon rains flooded the entrance and passageways with muddy water, making it nearly impossible for divers to see. Finding the boys perched on a small ledge deep in the cave was only the beginning of a massive effort to free them from their predicament. Countries including Australia, China, England, and the United States have donated resources and personnel to help in the rescue.

The team was found nearly two miles under the mountain and two-and-a-half miles deep within the extensive cave system. None of them know how to swim. After spending more than two weeks underground, the boys needed extensive medical testing and physical rehabilitation before they could be led out of the darkness. (As of the time of this article, several have already been rescued.)

Like the team that was lost to the world for a time, the truth of seventh-day Sabbath has been lost for centuries to much of the Christian world. Although the vast majority of the church has bee misguided about the true Sabbath, the light of the Fourth Commandment was not extinguished. For thousands of years, it was preserved by faithful Bible believers, such as the Waldensians, in the mountains and caves of the earth—and church leaders orchestrated by Satan sought to destroy reverence for God as the Creator.

Using the symbol of a pure woman, Revelation chapter 12 describes the experience of God’s faithful people under the persecution of the devil: “The serpent spewed water out of his mouth like a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away by the flood. But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon had spewed out of his mouth” (Revelation 12: 15, 16).

From the catacombs in Rome to the wilderness mountains of Italy, the Sabbath was kept as a memorial to the Creator. “Among the leading causes that had led to the separation of the true church from Rome was the hatred of the latter toward the Bible Sabbath. As foretold by prophecy, the papal power cast down the truth to the ground. The law of God was trampled in the dust, while the traditions and customs of men were exalted” (The Great Controversy, p.65).

In the mountains of Piedmont, faithful believers preserved the Sabbath truth for centuries. Ironically, many times these people fled into the caves in the mountains to find safety from their enemies.

During the Dark Ages, the truth of the seventh-day Sabbath was buried by tradition and superstition. Although the Sabbath still existed, the knowledge of it had been lost to the world. Just as one of the heroic rescuers lost his life in the rescue operation of the soccer team, thousands of men and women gave their lives as martyrs while witnessing to the truth of the Sabbath.

As the persecution against them began to wane, the light of the Sabbath began to grow brighter as believers found the truth of God’s sign of His creation. It took hundreds of years and thousands of people faithfully studying God’s Word for the Sabbath to come to the attention of the Christian world. Today, the light of the Sabbath is shining in almost every nation. “We have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts” (2 Peter 1;19).

Bible prophecy identifies the Sabbath as a critical marker in the final days of earth’s history. Just as the story of the young soccer team in Thailand has caught the attention of the world, the Sabbath truth will soon catch the attention of the world—ushering in the final climax of the great controversy.

Today, God is looking for people, young and old, who will take their place in spreading the truth about the seventh-day Sabbath to the world today. Revelation identifies this important message as carried by three angels to all the world: “I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth—to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people—saying with a loud voice, ‘Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water’ ” (Revelation 14:6, 7).
