Social Sunday

Social Sunday
After months of deliberation, Poland's president recently signed a law requiring most retailers to close on Sundays. The motivation behind the law is said to be to protect the social framework of society by allowing consistent time for families to spend together.

Poland is part of a larger European community that is promoting social values and the legal protection of a work-free Sunday throughout the European Union. In the mostly secular Europe, the idea of fostering social cohesion has resonated with the population, but many do not realize that the leading promoters of the legislation are religious organizations.

Although the current legislation appears to be promoting the good of the people, Bible students realize that prophecy points to a soon coming change in focus. Jesus warned us to "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves" (Matthew 7:15).

Bible prophecy describes the events taking place in our world today, saying, "I saw one of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed. And all the world marveled and followed the beast" (Revelation 13:3). Scripture goes on to explain how this beast, the enemy of God and His people, will impose regulations so that "no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name" (Revelation 13:17). The laws we see being enforced in Europe are a forewarning of the soon fulfillment of this prophecy.

Revelation declares that the final conflict will be over universal worship. About the beast, we are told, "Authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation. All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world" (Revelation 13:7, 8).

In this time of peace, we are called to give a clear warning about the deceptions of the beast and his counterfeit day of worship.
