Freedom for All

Freedom for All
World history is replete with examples of religious bigotry and persecution. The American experiment has been one of the most successful attempts to provide an environment of religious liberty, not merely religious toleration. Abraham Lincoln declared, “Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves."

Sadly, it seems that many Americans have forgotten that this basic premise applies to all religious or even non-religious groups.

God was the first to grant religious freedom, giving humanity the choice to follow Him or to follow the devil. Christ’s death on Calvary solidified that commitment to personal liberty—in direct opposition to Satan’s methods of deception and force.

Christ warned His followers that at the close of earth’s history, Satan would make a final attempt to force allegiance (Matthew 24:15). According to the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation, this controversy between force and freedom will focus on worship. God accepts worship that is based only on love, which is why Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15).

In the Ten Commandments, the Sabbath is the seal, or sign, of God’s authority. Our fidelity to Him is demonstrated by our choice to honor His Sabbath. In times of peace and freedom, it is easy to honor God and keep His holy Sabbath. But Christ’s words of warning remind us that we need to prepare now to be able to stand faithful to God when the forces of evil attempt to remove our freedoms.

As we examine our eroding freedoms in the world around us, we have the promise of Christ: “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). God’s Word outlines the future, the conflict over God’s holy Sabbath, and the final victory of His faithful people. Today, each of us can choose where we will stand in that final conflict.
