The Sabbath is Jewish, Sunday is Christian

The Sabbath is Jewish, Sunday is Christian
Though the Jews were indeed entrusted with God's memorial of Creation, the Sabbath was not made for the Jews alone but for all of mankind. Nearly all theologians, even those who keep Sunday, agree that the Bible is clear on this ...

"The Sabbath was established originally in no special connection with the Hebrews, but as an institution for all mankind, in commemoration of God's rest after the six days of creation. It was designed for all the descendants of Adam" (Adult Quarterly, Southern Baptist Convention series, August 15, 1937).

If the first Sabbath to be kept by a human being were not until just before Sinai (Exodus 16), and the Sabbath were merely a Jewish institution, as some claim, then why did Jesus say that the Sabbath was "made for man" (Mark 2:27)? And if no one was keeping the Sabbath, how then did generation after generation of human beings keep track of the weekly cycle for all those years? The book of Genesis is clear that the patriarchs used the seven-day week to count time (Genesis 2:1-3; 7:4, 10; 8:10, 12; 29:27, 28; 31:23; 50:10).

One would also wonder how the story of the Creation would have been maintained from generation to generation, a story that places special significance on the seventh day, if no one had ever observed the Sabbath during the 2,500 years between Creation and Sinai. The Creation story itself testifies that the Sabbath belongs to all people.

Furthermore, the seventh day held special significance in many ancient cultures outside of Judaism. Take the ancient Babylonians and Greeks, for example:

"The Sabbath-rest was a Babylonian, as well as a Hebrew, institution. ... The Sabbath was also known, at all events in Accadian times, as a 'dies nefastus,' a day on which certain work was forbidden to be done, and an old list of Babylonian festivals and fast-days tells us that on the seventh, fourteenth, nineteenth, twenty-first, and twenty-eighth days each month the Sabbath-rest had to be observed" (A. H. Sayce, The Higher Criticism and the Monuments, 1894, 74).

"But the seventh day is recognized as sacred, not by the Hebrews only, but also by the Greeks" (Clement of Alexandria).

Although the Scriptures do clearly portray the Sabbath as the memorial of God's Creation rest (Genesis 2:1-3; Exodus 20:11; Hebrews 4:4), and the early hours of the first day as the time when Christ arose from the dead (Matthew 28:1-6), nowhere do they identify Sunday worship as a commemoration of the resurrection (or as a replacement for Sabbath observance). Instead, they identify the Eucharist (communion service) as the commemoration of "the Lord's death" and the participation of the believer in baptism as the symbol of the Lord's death and resurrection.

"As often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes" (1 Corinthians 11:26).

"We were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life" (Romans 6:4, 5).

Peace and blessings be upon you all, this is a great breakdown of the actual Sabbath that was never really taught to people in church or at home in this generation. If we just sit and even think when do people mainly do all types of unholy things, they feel as if have to be moving around, buying and selling, and don't even realizing they are disobeying GOD, "Saturday" the real Sabbath.... The Bible tells us "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children".Hosea 4:6

I pray we all repent for past sins knowing and unknowingly. I ask for knowledge, wisdom , and understanding daily, to know and to do the will of God not man. We are in the last days and it is so relevant to those that are paying attention to signs and studying the Word day and night as the scriptures tell us to do.

Keep God first in all you do and never let things, people, or situations turn your heart or mind away from his commandments.

Peace and Blessings

That is what I believe as well. The 7th day, the Sabbath is Saturday and a Commandment of God. Just look at any calendar. Man doesn't get to change it to suit himself or to deceive by changing the calendar back when. I worship everyday but on Saturday I am all His.

Great point Terri. The Sabbath reminds me how to walk in the light of our Lord. My mind, and especially my body, are all His on Saturdays - I don't care what my husband says.

In the book of Revelation, there is a verse that says: "Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring—those who obey God's commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus."

In the context of the book of Revelation, the woman mentioned in this verse is a symbol of the people of God, and the dragon represents Satan. The verse suggests that Satan is angry with the people of God and seeks to make war against them. However, the verse also indicates that those who obey God's commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus will be protected from the attacks of Satan.

Satan hates everyone who obeys God's commandments.
Remembering the Sabbath and keeping it holy is one of God's commandments.
Satan makes war with anyone who keeps the Sabbath holy.
It has always been and will always be.

Val, why do you imagine the Christian church was founded in a vacuum? All early Christians were Jews, so of course they were Sabbath keepers, Christian were considered a Jewish sect for a reason.

Therefore, what needed to be specified is not what to keep and observe from the Jewish religion, but what NOT to observe, which they did specify (circumcision, Passover, sacrifices, etc).
These are the things the GENTILES were told they did not need to observe, because they understood Christianity was not independent from Judaism, but superseded and fulfilled it.

The Sabbath was made for man ( not Jews, Gentiles or any particular race, not man for the Sabbath... proof man was created on the sixth day , then the God gave an extra day called the Sabbath, Rested day, made holy, Sanctified it, (set it aside) and blessed it. I don’t see anywhere in scripture that it was changed to Sunday to REMEMBER.

"While the Catholic Church agrees with Seventh-day Adventists that Christians are obliged to keep the third commandment, we do not agree that for New Covenant followers of Christ the obligatory day of worship is the seventh day. According to the New Testament, the holy day Christians are bound to keep cannot be the Sabbath of the Old Covenant:

Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in regard to food or drink or in respect to festival, or a new moon or a Sabbath day—things which are a mere shadow (Gr.—skia) of what is to come, but the substance belongs to Christ (Col. 2:16-17).

St. Paul indicates here that the Sabbath is no longer binding on Christians. He calls it “a mere shadow.” It is interesting to note that the inspired author of Hebrews uses the same Greek word—skia, or “shadow”—for the animal sacrifices of the Old Covenant that are no longer binding on Christians, either. Hebrews 10:1 says:

For the law, having but a shadow (Gr.—skian) of the good things to come, and not the exact image (Gr.—eikona) of the objects, is never able by the sacrifices which they offer continually, year after year the same, to perfect those who draw near." (Staples, 2017).

Then that means fir you anyway the 10 commandments are not valid and its ok to break all 10. Paul was talking about the cerimonial laws of moses and sabbaths in this text are not capitalized which means it is not talking about the Sabbath day. KJV

I find it interesting that the only commandment that admonishes us to remember everyone is telling us to forget. Also, the Sabbath was instituted at creation and was written in stone by God's hand at Mt Sinai.

That's correct. I find it amazing that Christians just want to erase the 4th commandment like it's nonsense beause Christ came. So we should all kill and steal now? Crazy.

"One of the most attractive things about Seventh-day Adventists is their insistence that Christians obey the Ten Commandments—all ten of them. They rightly oppose the errant thinking among many Protestant Christian sects that claims, “We don’t have to keep the Ten Commandments anymore.” One problem, of course, is that Jesus disagrees: “And behold, one came up to him, saying, ‘Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?’ And [Jesus] said to him . . . ‘If you would enter life, keep the commandments’” (Matt. 19:16-17).

Catholics agree with our Seventh-day Adventist friends on this particular point. In fact, we believe we must not only keep the Ten Commandments but also the commandments of Jesus, the apostles, and the Church. Jesus gave us “a new commandment” when he said, “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34). In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus repeatedly said, “You have heard it said . . . but I say unto you . . .” (Matt. 5:21ff).

Jesus said, “He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives him who sent me” (Matt. 10:40; cf. Luke 10:16). And he said of the Church, “If [anyone] refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Truly, I say to you, whatever you [the church] bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you [the church] loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Matt. 18:17-18)." (Staples. 2017).

Now that I have a more true understanding of the Sabbath, I find it hard to believe that Christ in the New Testament would want us to follow nine commands and not all ten by “Grace”.
It also saddens me that when I try to speak to anyone about Sabate keeping iamb met with all kinds of arguments that Sunday is considered a Sabbath. But if that were true then it would be Saturday night when the sun goes down until Sunday night when the sun goes down. Not just go to church on Sunday for an hour and a half and that’s it.
I have even asked pastors about this and they told me that Sunday is a good day for Sabbath and that we are covered by Grace..
I followed the Sabbath Friday sundown to Saturday sundown. But it seriously troubles me that there are millions and millions of people who do not.
Lord help them “see”‼️

The reason for the change was simply to be different from the Jews, early Christians were demonstrating the importance of the teachings of Christ and how it’s fulfilled the law and if we just follow Christ we will be keeping every commandment of God, the Torah we do not follow, but Christ we follow and by doing so we keep every commandment of God. It’s all summed up in love god and love your neighbour it’s so simple! If you love your neighbours you will not force them to work 7 days a week, use commonsense and realise, just have faith in Jesus teachings and you will be doing the right thing and keeping his commandments.

Peace everyone

So you do not abide by the Old Testament? Odd since Jesus QUOTED the Old Testament, THE TORAH, each book. It was Jesus' SCRIPTURES. Look at REVELATION. That book cites sacrifices in GODS TEMPLE to be made. DURING the MILLENIUM! No error there. And DEMANDED that all people worship Him on SABBATH. And if you didnt, you were PUNISHED.

Yes. Same thing for Islam. Friday is the Muslims holy day of obligation (for men only) for congregational prayer [distinguishing it from the Jewish Sabbath and Christian Sunday Mass].

The Quran and Hadith (Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad) makes Friday special:

"“O you who believe! When the call to prayer is proclaimed on Friday hasten earnestly to the remembrance of God, and leave aside business. That is best for you if you but knew.” (Quran 62:9)

Prophet Muhammad told his followers  that “The five daily prayers, and from one Friday prayer till the next, serves as an expiation for whatever sins have been committed between them, provided one does not commit any major sin.” (Saheeh Muslim)" (Stacey, 2010).

"Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, said, “There is no day more virtuous than Friday.  In it there is an hour in which no one will pray to God except that God will hear his prayer”. (At Tirmidhi)" (Stacey, 2010).

"Whoever recites ‘The Cave’ on Friday, God will give him a light to the next Friday." (Bayhaqi)" (Stacey, 2010).

"Friday is also the day on which one of the greatest verses in the Quran was revealed.

“This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favor upon you, and have chosen Islam as your religion.”" (Quran 5:3)" (Stacey, 2010).

I believe that since the Jewish calendar starts from six in the evening to six the following evening, the christian celebration of the Sabbath could encompass a part of both Saturday and Sunday.

As a Catholic we also celebrate and keep (recognize) the Sabbath as we have what is called Vigil Mass, held on Saturday evening at 4pm, 5pm, or any time thereafter. Attending also fulfills our obligatory Sunday Mass. [The Code of Canon Law (can. 1248)]. (Grondin, n.d. and "Vigil Mass," n.d.).

The Sabbath begins on Friday evening and ends on Saturday evening. That is why on the Friday when Jesus died on the Cross, as the evening was approaching (John 19:31), that the Jewish leaders wanted Jesus and the two criminals to be taken down from their crosses so that they would not be hanging their over Sabbath. So it does not encompass Sunday at all.

You're correct - it doesn't encompass Sunday at all. That's because it was the High Sabbath (Passover) referenced in John, not the weekly Sabbath. Passover occurred on a Thursday that week in AD 30, and Christ died on Wednesday - not Friday as most folks assume due to that misunderstanding. The whole dynamic changes when you add three days and three nights to Wednesday afternoon and arrive at Saturday afternoon, when Mary and the others came to Christ's tomb to dress His wounds and anoint Him. Days were calculated in those times as beginning and ending with the setting of the sun, so by the time the disciples arrived, He had arisen. Their visit to the tomb would have taken place at the end of the weekly Sabbath, as the first day of the week was beginning.

That is not Biblical! Jesus was crucified on Preparation day, which is Friday. He rested over the Sabbath and rose on the first day which is Sunday. Consult your Bible!
