A Religious Showdown

A Religious Showdown
Bible students are closely watching the changing events in the world’s political and religious landscape and comparing these trends with the prophetic record. Recently, the Religious News Service surveyed major religious leaders about the role of religion in 2018. Re-occurring themes included uniting religious groups on social justice issues, such as poverty and equality, and building collective power in the political realm to impact the global community. Cohesiveness was the common theme.

One contributor pointed to the increasing challenges to religious liberty because of cultural pressures and increasing concerns about Islamic influences. He made the point that “many outspoken advocates of religious liberty find it perfectly consistent to simultaneously deny such protection to Muslims.” The claim is being made in many circles that Islam is not a religion but a political ideology, and as such does not qualify for freedom of religion.

Although the current political and religious scene is still divided, Bible prophecy presents the integration of religious and political entities at the end of time. The prophets identify several key aspects about the closing events of earth’s history, as already mentioned, a unified church-state power, the role of United States as one of the key players, and the final message of God’s mercy and judgment going to all the world (Revelation 13, 14).

This last invitation will focus on the issue of worship and allegiance. Today, God is preparing a people who will give undivided loyalty to Him and demonstrate that loyalty by keeping His holy Sabbath sacred. He is looking for those who are willing to “join themselves to the Lord, to serve Him, and to love the name of the Lord, to be His servants—everyone who keeps from defiling the Sabbath, and holds fast My covenant” (Isaiah 56:6).
