A Literal Cycle

It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed. Exodus 31:17

It represents the Creator as commanding men to observe the week of literal days in commemoration of vast, indefinite periods. This is unlike His method of dealing with His creatures. Our week contains seven days for one reason—it follows the pattern God established with the literal days of Creation. From the very beginning, our Creator set aside the seventh day as sacred and asked us to remember His creative power by keeping it holy for all time.
